The Office of Maunakea Management will receive public input on managing public access to Mauna Kea and other issues regarding the mountain at three open house meetings this month.
The meetings are scheduled for June 23 at West Hawaii Civic Center in Kona, June 24 at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo, and June 25 at the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ West Hawaii district office in Waimea.
The meetings, which will cover administrative rules for lands the University of Hawaii manages on the mountain, will last from 5-7:30 p.m.
Topics will include protection of Native Hawaiian rights, public activities, commercial activities, prohibited activities, safety concerns, permits, and administration and enforcement, OMKM said.
Following the meetings, OMKM will draft administrative rules for public review and comment before approval, OMKM Director Stephanie Nagata said in a statement.
“Once approved, the rules will be the mechanism that protects the cultural, natural and scientific resources, and public health and safety on UH’s managed lands on Maunakea,” she said.
